‘Top Shot’ is a new page dedicated solely to some of my most recent and treasured pictures. The page concentrates only on images that fulfil one of two requirements. Either something that I have been trying to capture for a number of years but until now failed, or one of those great moments in photography when something you were not expecting presents itself and everything comes together - it’s simply a case of right place at the right time.

As you can imagine, this page might not get updated very often!

Tawny owl in flight at night

This bird was captured with high speed flash. It was taken in using a wild bird just as it was leaving an owl box that was erected two years earlier. As there were only two chicks in the box this year, visits to the nest were few and far between so I had to wait many hours over several nights in order to get what I wanted.

Harvest mouse on hawthorn berries

For many years I’ve wanted to photograph harvest mice but have avoided trapping because I now feel it is not ethical to use ‘wild small mammals’ for the purpose of photography. When I was recently offered four captive bred models for the day, I couldn’t resist the opportunity. This shot was taken in my kitchen using artificial light.

This is a picture I’ve wanted to have in my library for many years. By no means unique from a sales point of view, it is something I've tried unsuccessfully on many occasions. Looking back, I now put the failures down to half hearted attempts. For me, the success of this picture has to be down to my switch to digital. The ability to check the results immediately meant I could stay and work the shot until I got exactly what I wanted. Taken in the wild using artificial light.
