Location features

Sanibel Island, Florida The refuge itself consists of a five-mile drive through mangrove swamps and open stretches of very shallow water, these areas offer a wealth of species. The best times for viewing are between 7.30 and 8.30 in the morning when the ocean tide is high. At these times the refuge water is at its lowest, as it is situated at the opposite side of the island. Birds arrive in their thousands to feast on young Blue Crabs and other invertebrates that move about on the exposed muddy bottom.

Working with flash This led me to a recent find whilst admiring the work of a notable wildlife artist. The bird within the painting had two highlights in the visible eye, one slightly smaller than the other. This indicated to me that the artist had not, on this occasion made any field studies of the species, and was in fact copying the work of a wildlife photographer - which, when you think about it is quite an oversight.

Countryside features

Winter wildlife The cold winter months in Britain can reveal a feast of activity, as feathered and furry woodland occupants are busy earning a living from the meagre pickings that the wild-wood has to offer. With the breeding season well and truly over, summer migratory birds have all returned south in search of a warmer climate. Insect populations have mostly died off after breeding, and the remainder are hibernating until warmer weather returns in the spring. Never the less, life in the woodland goes on.
